Schools all over NL are using software for educational purposes. Children get Google accounts, their progress is tracked in Magister, and there are many more uses of software in schools.
But what are the terms of service for these softwares? Is the privacy of children in good hands?
In this hackathon we will read the terms of service and enter them in TOSDR.org.

lecture: Matthijs Kooijman - Building information and floorplans (BIM) using open tools

When De WAR moved into their new building, we had a need for building information modeling - making an acturate floorplan, numbering all rooms, designing and documenting our fire safety system, documenting our electrical system, etc. Implementing this in expensive and propietary software and formats was not a feasible option for reasons of accessibility, so we set out to satisfy our needs with open tools.

We considered Blender, LibreCAD, QCAD and some others, but ended up with a combination of FreeCAD, Inkscape and some custom Python scripts.

During the week I will work on cleaning up and documenting the tools we have been using, and then present the results and our journey for others to build upon in a presentation in the weekend (or tag along during the week to play with these tools already).

workshop: Waag Futurelab - Stadskenners

Hoe kun je eigen kennis, meetgegevens en open toegankelijke databronnen gebruiken in het overbrengen van een overtuigend verhaal?
Samen met journaliste Jolanda van de Beld bespreken we onderzoeksjournalistiek op gebied van luchtkwaliteit. Zij werkte mee aan het artikel ‘We noemen het vieze lucht, maar je ruikt en ziet het niet’ van Investico. In dit artikel wordt gezondheid en luchtkwaliteit besproken. Het blijkt dat scholen, sportvelden, ouderenhuizen en andere locaties waar kwetsbare groepen vaak komen, nog te vaak dicht langs drukke wegen liggen volgens de GGD-gezondheidsrichtlijnen.

Jolanda van de Beld zal vertellen over hoe het onderzoek van Investico is gegaan. Hoe zijn ze begonnen? Welke mensen hebben ze gesproken en waarom? Waar liepen ze tegenaan? En hoe hebben ze dat opgelost?
Daarna zullen we in een workshop aan de slag gaan met hoe je van data over de luchtkwaliteit een verhaal maakt. Neem je eigen bevindingen over de luchtkwaliteit mee of ga aan de slag met een case over de uitstoot van stikstofdioxide rondom drukke wegen.

Waag Futurelab organiseert samenwerkingen en overleg rond het thema 'Slimme, leefbare steden', met als doel de wetenschap beter met de samenleving te verbinden. Dat doen we als trekker van de route Smart Liveable Cities binnen de Nationale Wetenschapsagenda. Als trekker van deze route zal Waag Futurelab dit jaar een thema aandragen voor de Nationale Wetenschaps Agenda (NWA). Dit thema zal de focus bepalen van toekomstig onderzoek binnen de NWA route Smart Liveable Cities.

Om de verbinding tussen wetenschap en samenleving te versterken, nodigen we je uit om tijdens deze sessie mee te denken over welk thema centraal moet staan in het onderzoek naar de slimme stad.

I might bring a couple of classic 70’s terminals as well so you might not even need to bring your own laptop.

lecture: Ton Zijlstra - Using the emerging EU data legal framework and data spaces

Since 2020 the EU has been creating a bing new legal framework for the use of data. Together they form the EU single market for data, called the common data space. The new laws contain a range of instruments and rights that EU citizens can use to work with data for their own purposes. This includes both public and non-public data from governments, the data from your smart devices, as well as data portability between platforms and cloud services. I have been involved in creating parts of these laws, and actively keep track of their development to help data holders and data users build on their implementation.

other: Moritz Harzenetter - Engaging the Unusual Suspects with Citizen Science

Samen Meten Utrecht will launch soon a new project that aims to involve a cohort of society that is usually underrepresented in citizen science: vulnerable communities with migrant background. The project targets heat stress in petrified neighbouds and participants will collect data about experienced temperatures, aiming to create awareness for greening neighbourhouds and to stimulate interventions. This session is conceptualized as an open forum in which we want to discuss with Koppelting participants what strategies are effective to involve the target group. In particular prevailing suspicion towards sensors is identified as a barrier for participation and we welcome your ideas how to tackle those.

workshop: Thomas Kole - Your Neighborhood in 3D - Blender & PDOK

What’s a good place for solar panels? What area receives the least shade in the summer? What would this new building look like from my house, what if this parking lot was a park instead? Visualizing neighborhood-scale information is available to anyone with a computer, using the powerful and open combination of Blender and PDOK, the Dutch Geodata platform.

In this workshop, we’ll use Blender, plus the GIS and Hoogtedata add-ons to import a section of the Netherlands, which we will analyze, modify, and visualize.

Gelote burgerraden staan volop in de belangstelling. In navolging van ervaringen in het buitenland zijn er de afgelopen jaren ook in NL een aantal gelote burgerraden aan het werk gegaan. Het lijkt dan ook geen vraag meer of gelote burgerraden een plek verdienen in ons democratisch landschap. De belangrijkste vraag ligt echter nog open: Wélke plek krijgen ze toebedeeld? Het antwoord op die vraag kan onze democratie maken of breken.

Passive dry toilets need a large reservoir to stabilise the composting process. In order to fit one into a smaller room we developed an open source system to monitor and control temperature, moisture and oxygen availability.

KITT Engineering is developing a smart tile. This project contains many technologies that are interesting for low power MCU designs. We focus on STM32L series like the MJS2020 board. Using the Cube IDE you have better access to the advanced functions of this MCU family. To test independent of TTN we did setup a Chirpstack and use Gateways based upon RAK Wireless modules.

workshop: wout zweers - Hands on ruimtelijke modellen bouwen voor complexe vraagstukken.

“ Hoe krijg je mensen geïnteresseerd en hoe kunnen we ideeën goed vormen over maatschappelijk complexe vragen?”
Wout Zweers bouwt hiervoor maquettes met en voor mensen die zijn betrokken bij complexe vraagstukken zoals gebruik van water. Hands-on heeft hier een belangrijk aandeel in. Het fysieke bouwen en samen ermee bezig zijn zorgt voor betrokkenheid en inzicht. Maar hoe organiseer je dat en hoe gebruik je het?
Er wordt een korte workshop gegeven, zodat je een idee krijgt van de werkwijze.
Een bijkomend aspect: in het Wetropolis project werkten veel verschillende partijen mee met eigen ideeën en belangen.

hackathon: Stefan Lehner - Clock Work Lamp

We wil develop and test simple low tech solution to produce electricity for a lamp with human force, weights, springs and other ideas.

These activities take place in workshops in the WAR from Monday 7th to Thursday 10 th of august from 10 to 6 in the afternoon.

hackathon: Dirk van Vreeswijk - De Tussen Stand

De Tussen Stand is an old de WAR format where participants share where they are within their projects. The Koppelting Tussen Stand will a.o. materialise the current to-do list of De Nieuwe Graanschuur. On Tuesday night we will visit the shop from 20-22. Further the NMU will host a session on VOKO and other ‘korte keten’ initiatives on friday from 10-12.

workshop: Peter Smit en Dirk van Vreeswijk - De Tussen Stand m.b.t. Voedsel Kollektieven in de Provincie Utrecht

De Natuur en Milieu Federatie Utrecht (NMU) zal in september een project starten om samenwerking tussen lokale duurzaamheidsgroepen en duurzame boeren te stimuleren.
Peter Smit – projectmanager bij NMU – is op zoek naar boeren en burgers die aan dit project mee willen doen.
In deze workshop – die gehouden wordt op vrijdag 11 augustus van 10-12 bij De Tussen Stand – zullen we vooral kijken naar de mogelijkheden van voedselcollectieven, zoals die al bestaan in Amersfoort, Utrecht en Zeist. Een ieder betrokken op of bij dit onderwerp is welkom.

workshop: Citizen Science Lab - Luchtkwaliteit in Beeld

In this DIY workshop Margaret Gold & Marin Visscher of the Citizen Science Lab, will present the 'Luchtkwaliteit in Beeld' initiative and the Pollution Painter technique invented by artist Robin Price, for putting air quality data literally in the picture. Together we will build our own Pollution Painter with an AQ sensor, Pi zero w, Arduino pro mini, LED strips and a fishing rod.

Data-verzamelende en persoonsprofielen opbouwende BigTech bedrijven hebben een fundamenteel andere kijk op publiek waarden dan dat scholen dat hebben. Daarom is het niet verstandig om het ontwerpen van de digitale omgeving op scholen aan deze BigTech bedrijven over te laten. Dat kan anders! Het is hoog tijd dat scholen de digitale school omgeving weer terugveroveren. Met de coalitie voor eerlijk digitaal onderwijs laten wij zien dat dat ook anders kan, op basis van vrije opensource software. Nu op twee pilot scholen, straks in het gehele onderwijs?

workshop: Iris Bekkers and Shams Hazim - Imagineer the ideal multispecies hotel for your garden

Shams Hazim and Iris Bekkers are creating clay-printed towers that provide hiding spots for insects. Through a water reservoir they provide plants around the tower to grow, and subsequently offer the species residing or visiting the tower water, food and shade. In this workshop you will help imagine what these towers could alternatively look like, feel like, and how they could function. Let your imagination run wild and imagine the best habitat for the species in your own garden/ balcony or neighbourhood.

demonstration: Rob van den Bogaard-Braaf - Pseudo-turtle voor een lagere drempel tot linked data en burgerwetenschap

Codekracht is een superkracht, vooral als je daarmee beter kunt uitleggen wat je standpunten zijn, en waar je je conclusies op baseert. Bijvoorbeeld op eigen metingen, maar ook externe referenties.
RDF is een semantisch netwerkconcept dat daar heel geschikt voor is, maar de bestandsformaten ervoor kunnen een drempel zijn om er (lekker) mee te werken en uit te wisselen.
Turtle is een formaat dat dicht in de buurt komt van een fijn machine- en mens-leesbaar tekstformaat. Ik heb een simpele parser gemaakt voor een vereenvoudiging daarvan, waardoor je makkelijker begint met bouwen aan je kennisnetwerk. Ik gebruik de compacte, functionele, streng doch rechtvaardige, maar zelfs vriendelijke programmeertaal Elm daarvoor.
Ik ben donderdag 10 augustus gedurende de dag aanwezig om het programma te volgen, voor evt informele demonstratie en (samen) verder hacken.

lecture: Marc de Lignie - Citizen measuring network for line voltage

It is proposed to set up a measuring network to demonstrate the shortcomings of the local electricity distribution network during hours of maximum solar energy production. Such a network is possible using cheap smart power monitoring plugs equipped with Tasmota open source software.
